Cedarwood is usually offered as an essential oil, however this product is the far rarer absolute extract. This extract is from the Cedarwood Atlas tree, which is far more smooth and balsamic than Virginian Cedarwood which has a distinctive pencil shavings smell. This cedarwood absolute does not shout too loud, and possesses a mellow, dark, balsamic odour which is useful for extending woody cedar accords into the mid note range and increasing the complexity of the odour profile.

The Atlas cedar is a tree native to Morocco and Algeria. In Morocco, the cedar forest covers nearly 130,000 hectares (320,000 acres) in the Rif and Atlas Mountains, at altitudes of 1,600 to 2,000 meters. The trees can grow to a height of 40 meters. Logging operations are regulated in this natural forest. Essential oil of Atlas cedar is distilled from sawdust, a by-product of the lumber industry.
