Nonalactone gamma (Aldehyde C18)

Gamma nonalactone, also commonly known as Aldehyde C18, creates a creamy coconut note in perfume compositions it's added to, despite smelling fairly innocuous alone. It can be surprising how powerful trace amounts are in a fragrance. Gamma nonalactone is not an aldehyde, but a lactone (despite being misnamed Aldehyde C18 for historical reasons). It's indicative of a "lactonic" smell in perfumery. It can be used in jasmine and tuberose accords or overt coconut ones, but most commonly perhaps it's simply used in an abstract way for its creamy and coconut leaning lactonic effect which is popular in budget cosmetic and designer fragrances alike; in laymans terms, adding a touch of this usually creates a creamy "yummyness".
