Safranal is the raw material which gives an accurate saffron smell. The main downside is that it's very restricted by the IFRA. The upside is that it's very potent, so you can still smell it under heavy dilution. You can also get safraleine, which is a great raw material in its own right, however it is not a substitute for safranal. Safranal is important in many modern fragrance compositions, such as those inspired by Baccarat Rouge 540.
