Lavender Maillette is a particularly fine variety of true lavender, i.e. Lavandula angustifolia, not the far more common lavandin varieties which have a higher yield. Maillette lavender is sweeter than most lavenders due to less camphoraceous notes, and hence is often preferred by fine fragrance perfumers. It's also more consistent in smell across harvests since the plants reproduce by cloning instead of by seed.
From the manufacturer:
Lavender has been distilled for more than 150 years, and lavender oil has played a key role in the history of perfumery, especially for the formulation of “eaux de cologne.” Originally harvested wild in the highlands of Provence, the plant was later cultivated, using different varieties to adapt to various climates and altitudes. The main lavender producing countries today are France, Bulgaria and other Eastern European countries, as well as China.
In France and Bulgaria, Biolandes produces the finest qualities of organic and conventional lavenders. In Bulgaria, we cultivate our own fields of organic lavender. In France, we have been working in close partnership with farmers of organic lavender maillette since 2014.
