Mango is a juicy, fleshy and slightly resinous tropical fruit. It can be used to create an exotic moreish effect in the top-mid of fragrances. There is no usable mango extract for perfumery, so the note must be composed by a perfumer from aromachemicals.
The renowned perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena recommends using ionones in combination with gamma undecalactone and blackcurrant bud absolute to sketch out the smell of mangoes. Gamma undecalactone is a classic peach note which sets the colour. There are many ionones (violety notes) to pick from, but we’d recommend either ionone alpha (sweeter and more velvety-violet) or ionone beta (more natural, woody-raspberry) in this context. Blackcurrant bud provides the tropical aspect, and can be replaced by the popular Cassis Base 345B, which is more cost effective and longer lasting. Our in-house perfumer Sam Macer recommends adding to this myrcene to create realism by adding the resinous facet, as well as a trace of manzanate for the initial juicy burst and ethyl maltol for the sweetness.
