Myrcene is naturally emitted by plants and is essentially a nature smell. Think walking in a fresh leafy late springtime forest. It is not often used directly in perfumery, however, the perfumer here at The Fragrance Foundry uses it for two accords in particular: Firstly, the petrichor (rain) accord (which is also available for purchase on The Fragrance Foundry), and secondly, as a secret ingredient for adding realism to mango accords (mangoes naturally contain myrcene).

Before reading the description, I immediately thought of mango skin and crushed green leaves. Myrcene smells remarkably natural, as if you've stepped into a fresh green forest after spring growth. The opening has a ripe mango character with subtle citrus nuances, followed by a fresh leafy quality that feels alive and outdoorsy.
What impressed me most is how realistic it smells. It doesn't have the polished character of many perfumery materials; instead, it captures something raw and authentic from the natural world. Once I read the description, I could immediately understand why it is used in mango accords and petrichor compositions.
To my nose, Myrcene would be particularly useful for adding realism to fruit accords, green notes, rain accords and natural outdoor effects. A fascinating material for anyone interested in understanding how perfumers recreate nature rather than simply imitate it.
Another excellent educational material from The Fragrance Foundry.
